Senator Katie Britt (yes, she's a U.S. senator) will have trouble living down her Republican response to the State of the Union. There have been other bad ones (Gov. Jindal, another "look we are diverse"! was up there).
But, she took things to new heights. Also, you know the whole thing was specially crafted. Like John Kennedy (R-LA) and his Mr. Haney voice, the voice is not quite real. Ditto the actual content.
She's so bad that SNL (as it rarely does) truly hit the parody (not that it's too hard with that much material) ala Matt Damon and Brett Kavanaugh. Scarlett Johansson needed the voice. Other than that, the look and script (down to the craziness) was A-1.
The somewhat sexy baby voice and cross (a "crucifix" is a cross with Jesus on it) prominently shown with your top open just enough to be sorta sexy but not slutty while in a kitchen (she's a wife and mother, you know) is all there.
Then, you have to go to the message, including the threat to our way of life, facts be damned. And, are we better than we were four years ago? You mean in 2020, when COVID broke out? Sorta?
I saw various accounts that the whole thing didn't go over well with various Republicans. "WTF." Still, again, since the whole thing was not real, you get the idea that there was an audience for that sort of thing.
They were aiming for a certain base for which that sort of thing appeals. Not that I'm one to say, but I figure you can do that somehow without everyone else saying "WTF!" Then again, Donald Trump. He's still a thing.
How does Katie Britt feel now? Does she feel embarrassed? Many Republicans should be these days. Still, few became national embarrassments on quite this level.
Who is the real Katie Britt? Mike Johnson was a litigator who defended conservative religious claims and was a state legislator.
Katie Britt grew up as Katie Elizabeth Boyd. She was cited in an article about "19 valedictorians of the Enterprise High School Class of 2000," which sounds weird. I thought there was only one valedictorian. Few would be surprised that she was a cheerleader. She later graduated from the University of the Alabama School of Law.
She was Sen. Richard Shelby's (R-AL) press secretary and later his chief of staff. She spent some time in a corporate law firm.
Britt was selected as president and CEO of the Business Council of Alabama; she was the first woman to lead the organization. Not someone who is just in the kitchen.
Sen. Richard Shelby was conservative but still a fairly traditional Republican. Katie Britt replaced him in office. Jen Psaki on her show this afternoon played a bit of her (normal) personal response to last year's State of the Union.
Of course, she was a steady Republican. She opposed shutdowns during COVID-19. She supported Trump. "Illegal immigration" is a basic issue for her though she didn't support a compromise bill she helped to craft (and then help block).
She's not just a caricature, even if she's willing to make herself one. Don't buy it.
BTW, Senator Joe Biden when he was about her age also did a response (to President Reagan). He was less creepy.
